DECRYPT INFANTS COUGH IN ONE MINUTE

Infant coughing could signify or mean something different to different mothers, and it’s not as if you can ask your baby and get a reply about what is wrong. It can be quite difficult to come to a decision, whether to make an appointment with your doctor, maybe you should call up your doctor for an advice, or just head straight to the ER. Infants younger than 4 months don’t cough that much but if they do, it’s serious.

There are basically two kinds of coughs that serve this purpose in infant:

As a nursing mother you must be wondering about what time you should be worried when you baby starts coughing, you should call your doctor for advice

  • When your baby starts coughing while she/he is less than 4month old.
  • When you baby suffers from a dry or wet cough accompanied by a mild cold and fever
  • A dry cough formed by cold – it is usually accompanied by a running nose but no fever, it normally  last a bit between the period of about  five to seven days

Meanwhile you should be completely worried when your baby is

  • Unable to catch her breath, maybe while coughing
  • Rapidly contrasting and expanding his stomach (probably struggling to breathe)
  • Grunting continuously
  • Turning blue

As mentioned earlier, coughing in infants definitely generate different opinion in parents, so to help nursing mothers identify one that require immediate medical attention you will have to stay calm, check and listen carefully to the cough to identify possible symptoms, and follow simple instructions below in other to avoid worrying too much (we can never worry too much when it comes to our kids).

COMMON COLD OR FLU

Symptoms that indicate common cold in a baby’s cough include

  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • The cough sounds like a dry hack
  • Coughs are commonly  dry  but that depends on the severity of the cold on the baby
  • Some rattling mucus around the nose and a slight fever at night

Treatment: Try the usual mother “lots-of-fluids-and-plenty-of-rest” routine. Avoid using medication for common cold and cough in infants but if you suspect any form of fever, Acetaminophen is safe for usage to reduce a simple fever, but if high temperature persistent, kindly call you doctor as your baby is probably sick. Fever is never to be taken lightly in infants.

CROUP

A barking cough accompanied by difficulty in breathing in infants, it starts with normal cold and sniffle during the day. It is quite common in kids between age 5 and below.

Treatment: Firstly, calm your baby while you consider any of the steps below, just to ease her breathing.

Consider getting your child to breathe in the steamy air or damp air should make it easier for him to breathe. Better still, have your child breathe the air from a cool-mist humidifier.

PNEUMONIA

Pneumonia is a bacterial or viral or infection of the lungs caused by a number of conditions, including common cold. Infants cough sounds wet and phlegm with colorful fluid accompanying it. It also causes fatigue in infants.

Treatment: Treatment of pneumonia strongly depends on the cause (viral or bacterial), so call your doctor if baby has a fever.

WHOOPING COUGH

This is a bacterial infection, popular know to be a leading cause of infant illness and death until the discovery DTP vaccine. It is not usually associated with the symptoms of cold and fever, it sound more like a rapid whooping sound. Other key symptoms include frequent alarming coughing spasms, bulging eyes and facial discoloration

Treatment: Pneumonia is a life threatening ailments so prevention is key, so make sure your baby is properly immunized with the right vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis). But, if you suspect pneumonia in your baby, call for emergency help immediately or head straight to the hospital.

Afterwards, the baby and every member of your household are prescribed erythromycin -an antibiotic to prevent the spread of this contagious disease.

Handy Tips on how to infants feel better when cough shows up, try giving them soothing syrups with glycerol or glycerine. If your child is at least a year old, give them a warm drink of diluted lemon juice and honey, the honey coats their throat thereby helping them to relieve the irritation.
